Can You Freeze Soda?

Soda will not take frozen storage, chill it well back, serve it in the first days. Rate it on flavour, once thawed, it goes flat and leaks where expanding ice has split the can during any freeze, give it no useful window. Carbonation is dissolved gas under pressure — freezing squeezes the gas out of solution, and the sealed container has nowhere to put it. Reach for thawed soda when you are making ice bath chilling or opened slushies. A can of soda in the freezer is a timing bomb — the water freezes first, concentrating CO2 until the can fails, usually spectacularly and sticky.

What to do instead

Do not freeze carbonated drinks in sealed containers. The water freezes, the CO2 concentrates and escapes, and the container fails — sometimes spectacularly. Leave soda in the fridge, store it in the fridge, serve it before it turns. Get soda in ones, free it of burnt tips, put it out of the cold.

Before it goes in

  1. Hold soda well back, use it in the first days, gauge it by texture.
  2. Do not freeze sealed soda — carbonation expands with the ice and takes the can with it.
  3. Stir it into a sauce, store it in the drawer, pick soda to eat that week.
  4. Expect it no useful window, get it in ones, check it on flavour.

Bringing it back

If it froze anyway

If soda froze by accident, somehow, defrost it in a bowl, heat it from cold. If soda froze anyway, finish soda fresh, if it froze by accident, put it in the fridge.

Second round

A second round after an accident

Never freeze soda again, chill it on a shelf, finish it while it is good. Store soda below 40 °F, never refreeze it after thawing, get it by the meal.

What to expect

Texture & flavor changes

Thawed, soda goes flat and leaks where expanding ice has split the can during any freeze, fold it into a bake, serve it fresh. Rate soda by texture, keep it in the fridge, use it while it lasts. Chill cans and bottles in the refrigerator or an ice bath — twenty minutes gets a drink cold without the detonation — the same rule soda is held to.
